During the 3rd quarter of 2013, mobile devices market entry was a record-breaking 56% – 244 million smartphones and 438 million handsets were shipped worldwide. Samsung kept its 1st position as the top supplier and even expanded its global smartphone shipments by 35%. Apple’s share is 14%, followed by Windows Phone at 4%, with a 165% growth since last year (95% of which are Nokia devices). BlackBerry is at measly 1.5%.
Android OS hit a new high point of 80.6% shipment shares in Q3, thanks to market growth of Samsung and other manufacturers like HTC, LG, Lenovo, Huawei and Xiaomi. According to ABI senior analyst, Michael Morgan, “there remains little opportunity for new market entrants to make a significant impact on Android’s dominance.”
Android’s growing dominance is possibly the cause for iPhone’s lower-than-expected market shares. Non the less, Apple’s revenue guidance for Q4 indicates a record 53 million iPhone shipments.
