Nexus devices, running on stock Android, are always the first ones to get the latest OS updates while other Android devices with custom OEM patches usually gets it 2-4 months later. And Google’s solution? To release Google Play Edition variants of those devices that runs on stock Android OS. Imagine your favorite Galaxy S4 device but without TouchWiz and all the bloat that comes with it; Yeah. And of course it means no more months of waiting for the latest OTA updates.
The Android 4.4.2 update has already started rolling out on Monday to the Nexus family of devices. And now, it looks like it’s time for the Google Play Edition devices’ turn as the newly released LG G Pad 8.3 Google Play Edition is getting Android 4.4.2 as we speak. The update is about 52MB in size in which we expect contains bug fixes and stability updates similar to what the Nexus device received.
There has also been rumors going around that the HTC One Google Play Edition is next in line to get the update, though we haven’t seen concrete proof of it yet. But what we know is HTC did just post the kernel source for the Android 4.4.2 update, so it could very well arrive today as well. We’ll keep you updated.
